Countrywide Home Loan Company

Some people thing mortgage loan companies are basically the same, but those who have used Country Wide Home Loans feel differently. Country Wide is noted by its supporters for its large number of locations and the ease of the loan process and they feel Country Wide Home Loans is “Awesome to Work With”. But other reviewers are not that happy with Country Wide Home Loans, with comments like “Countrywide is Worse than a Category 5 Hurricane” common among them. The cons seem to outweigh the pros with Country Wide Home Loans, making it a less then desirable Mortgage Lender.

"The friendliest and easiest to work with"

5 stars

I prefer Countrywide over all other companies we've used. They are easy to work with, friendly, and really try to make the overall experience of financing as pleasant as possible. They have lots of locations to work from. Their rates are excellent. They also have other services that help with doing business with them. You can access your account on-line and they also have assistance with obtaining insurance for your property with good rates.

"Countrywide is worse than a Category 5 hurricane"

1 star

I live in Florida and I had Countrywide as a mortgage company. A few years ago, we had the eyes of two hurricane go right over my house within a two week period. I thought that that was frightening, but my nightmare was only starting.

Because of the damage to my house, I contacted Countrywide to see if I could defer a payment on my mortgage to help me meet my deductible. I was told that they do not defer payments on the mortgage but could do something else to help me. I was told that they would put a hold on three months of payments to help out (I thought, "Wow, this company is the greatest"). Boy was I wrong.

I was told that once the three months were up they would give me an additional loan or increase my monthly payments to "catch up." Please keep in mind that nothing before the hurricanes or after the three months changed with my financial situation. After the three months I was told that I was misinformed and that they were sorry but I didn't qualify for an additional loan and/or additional payments on my mortgage. They were going to foreclose on my home!!

After almost having a nervous breakdown and resorting to some very quick thinking. I decided that my only way out of this would be to pull out money from my 401K (my retirement money) to "catch up" and also so I could keep my home. I heard later that Countrywide had pulled this on a lot of people, but some of them weren't so lucky and didn't have a 401K to fall back on. Countrywide foreclosed on their homes.

Countrywide is the worse company ever!!! I finally got away from them after refinancing three times since then (they kept buying my loan). I am still paying for it because now my mortgage payment is almost twice as much because of the refinance charges.

They were going under and all I kept thinking was, what goes around, comes around. But then I found out that they received backing from Bank of America and are back in business. After how I was treated by them, I would never do business with them or with Bank of Atlantic for backing them. There were alot of people that I spoke to that felt the same way as I did about Countrywide. The BBB and consumer affairs were also contacted because of them numerous times. BE CAREFUL AND BEWARE!!

""Call back next week" ... the same line every time!"

1 star

I've had an ARM with Countrywide for three years - I was going to refinance but have since found out the value of my property is less than the balance on my loan. Now I have to wait until the market perks up again. In the meantime, I've had a heart attack and understandably couldn't work for awhile. I called Countrywide to see if they would defer some payments until I was back on my feet. I was told NO! They sent me to the 'Workout' department where I submitted a hardship letter in February 08. I was told to check back in 30 days. Almost every week since then I've been told either that they don't have my papers, it's not their job and they'll pass it to a supervisor and during each and every call, was told to call back in a week which I have been doing and getting the same old run around. One representative even suggested 'downsizing' or selling my home! It's a small, modest home I share with my special needs daughter. I cannot possibly relocate. I've was struggling for awhile, friends helped me out and now that I'm 'almost' back on my feet they're harassing me for late payments. I'm doing the best I can - I do usually manage to get the payment in before the end of the month but my May 1st payment wasn't made until June 2nd and they snapped a foreclosure letter out right away. I'm stuck in their grip at 11%, because I can't even refinance due to the market value of my house. They've screwed me over and over. I'm still waiting for the 'workout department' to consider my loan for an interest reduction. It's now June 19th. FOUR months since I submitted my documentation and three months since my first call after '30' days. I still keep calling - they still keep telling me to call in a week. They're TERRIBLE and just prey on people hoping they'll foreclose. A very poor company to do business with. Oh, another thing - one representative gave us her last name and direct phone number. The next call was directly to her - it rang and rang - I called back to their regular number and yelled at the friggin automated phone response until I got a representative. Finally - then when I ask for the rep I was told there was nobody there by that name! She didn't exist!!!

"Very bad and rude Sales Representative"

1 star

I signed up for this Countrywide Home Loan company to get some information about the latest mortgage rate. Their sales representative called me back and asked me some very detailed personal information, which I am not ready to give. I told him that all I want at this point is to get some information about current mortgage rate. Then he told me that I did not understand how it works and how everyone is different ...and so on. then I told him all I want to know is what the best rate he got for the day. Then he just hang up on me!! I called him right back and asked him why he hang up on me. He said it wasn't him, who talked to me jus a second ago. When he asked me the name of the person I talked to, I told him and he said that was his name, then he said that was impossible since he was just off the meeting with his boss. From the sound of his voice, I am 100 percent sure that was him. I just could not believe how rude and what a liar he is. How can anyone possibly trust or loan anything from the company which has a sale people like this one!!

"They have a chronic way of messing up the simplest things"

1 star

We have used Countrywide twice (and currently) and they have both times grossly miscalculated the final cost for monthly payments and/or other fees which ended up drastically changing our monthly payments. Most recently, they miscalculated our home insurance 'upfront' money and did not catch their mistake until 6 months later, placing an additional $800 on our monthly amount right at Christmas which happened to be just what we had available in our Christmas Club account. We were told how much short our escrow would be and paid it in 2 payments to "catch-up" with the escrow shortage. Then we were told we were $161 still short because of another employee's miscalculation. It has been very frustrating and annoying to deal with, not to mention very inconvenient financially

"Customer options, customer service, and time on hold stinks!"

1 star

When I have called Countrywide to get loans, they have been wonderful. After 9 years of paying on time, when I need help because of loosing a job. I spent over 4 hours in 3 days talking to people, getting "disconnected", getting put to the wrong department, etc. They will take your loan, but will NOT help you! Nine years of interest payments and they are not willing to help. I do want to note that I am not behind on my payments, so it is not that they are "mad" at me.

"Countrywide is a pesky company"

1 star

I don't know where countrywide got my number, but they are to the harassing point of wanting to refinance my home. I have told them repeatedly i am not paying them $4000 to refinance more money for longer time to get the same payment. They always "Understand where you are coming from, but if you will just trust us" Trust them? Who are they kidding. Aren't they the ones that Bank of America just bailed out of hot water! No Thanks!

"Cannot be trusted"

2 stars

This company has horrible customer service. They are too large of a company and therefore do not care about the little people. They cost us huge amounts of money we did not have due to an unsecure payment system, and will not admit fault. Now I hate that I have to write checks to them. I hope Bank of America does buy them out.

"I have been unsatisfied with the cooperation I have gotten"

1 star

Countrywide was very helpful when I was looking from a home loan and I have been pleased with the loan itself but have not gotten cooperation from the representatives I have spoken with over the last couple of years as I think of selling and reinvesting. They do not follow through after promising to send paperwork, etc...

"Stay away from this company"

1 star

Since I have been with this company, they have been very aggressive and bothersome on payments made and if you get behind, very hard to work with in catching up.

If you want info from them, be ready to wait a week to get a call back. If you owe them and are behind, expect to get 12 calls a day.

"Awesome to Work With"

5 stars

I contacted Countrywide about refinancing my home. I had a call and my home refinanced in less than a week. It was awesome. The people I worked with were friendly and efficient. I am even looking into buying a second home and using Countrywide for that financing.
